First Look: Bay Area Barrel Man

Full color, front and back designs limited to only 36 prints. Available only through Tony.psd.

Ever since I launched Tony.psd as a clothing label 2 years ago, I initially wanted to put out a "Barrel man" design but kept pushing it back. I revisited the idea last Friday and when I finished the drawing, something was missing. The original brown colors I had used for the Barrel Man design over a black or white shirt just wasn't appealing for me. I wasn't a fan of tan colored shirts as well. A few years ago my buddy released a fabulous Barrel Man shirt as well and I didn't want to step on his toes creatively. So I tried out other color combinations and the idea of mashing it with the Golden State Warriors old school "City" logo grew on me because it worked well visually. Heck, I've toyed around with "The City" look for years, this just made it more amusing of mashing together 2 completely different ideas!

"Bay Area Barrel Man" is scheduled for a July release date. It's limited to 36 prints (pre-shrunk, A-Style branded shirts) and is set for $25 each. For more information, check out Tony.psd's official store.

Archives: Vector Illustrations 2000-2004 circa

A collection of vector illustrations I had redrawn from original pencils sketches between 2000-2004

Before I started contributing illustrations for Golden State of Mind in 2007 and started my collection of vector Illustrations, these were a handful of vector illustrations I occasionally worked on when I had spare time. On each drawing example shown above, the left sample of each concept shows the outlines in it's early stages while the right sample shows the finished piece completed in Adobe Illustrator. Many of these illustrations were referenced from some of my favorite comic artists (such as J. Scott Campbell) using their original pencil sketches as the template.

Sketches: Brainstorming New GSoM Logo Ideas

Preview: Here's a handful of scrapped ideas I sketched out for the new Golden State of Mind logo. I've submitted 2 logo comps to the group and hopefully we should have something soon. Many of these quick sketches are just some ideas I scribbled out when it was fresh in my head.

Preview: The Barrel Man Design

Man, I've wanted to do a "Barrel Man" design since I started doing shirts 2 years ago. I never really got to it and the concept constantly got pushed back. For those of you that don't know, the Barrel Man is this amusing Filipino figurine that when you remove the barrel... it exposes an offensive surprise, lol. This is a work in progress, I've got a few mash up ideas in store. Definitely a fun concept. I'm glad I finally caught up to doing this as amusing as it is.

Fan Pics: Pwet-Mania at Mission Peak

Submitted and photographed by Brian Novicio. Mission Peak overlooking Fremont, CA

This is something else. I've seen people get real creative with the placement of stickers but hiking up Mission peak (which is not an easy task) and having a "Pwet-Mania" sticker on hand than posting it at the top of the peak on an observation pole... LOL! I'd laugh if I'd seen it, it's so random yet beautiful! Thanks for sharing this Brian!

My Birthday Party

The perks of being a graphic artist: desinging your own birthday party invite, lol.

First my wife asked me what I wanted to do on my birthday, than my homie B.Rich asked me "have your party here at Jacks, I DJ on Friday nights... who do you want to have DJ on your birthday?" When I asked if D-Styles (Low-End Theory, Beat Junkies and Invisbl Skratch Piklz fame) could spin on my birthday and B.Rich made it happen, the date was set: Friday, July 8th at Jack's Bar in San Jose! D-Styles will be spinning along with Overflo, B.Rich and Vegabond. There's no dress code or no cover fees! Come have some drinks and enjoy some good music! I hope to see you all there!

For more info on Jack's Bar and Lounge, check out their Facebook page.
Also Check out Overflo, B.Rich and Vegabond's "Rewind at Jacks" Facebook page.
Lastly, the man himself, follow D-Styles on twitter and peep his Facebook page.

Important quotes I live by...

I've been collecting inspirational quotes for the past few years. Whether it was something said on tv, read on a publication or simply written on the wall, truth be told those quotes mean something special to me. The 3 that I've listed above have inspired me to take control of my life, career and who I am publicly. Who knows where life will take years from now? For all I know, these 3 quotes represent who I want to be: a dedicated hard worker who loves what he does and has fun at the same time.

Let me break these quotes down for you:

1) I actually got this quote from Conan's last episode on the Tonight Show. It just humbled me as a graphic designer when he said this. It made me realize that I don't have to know everything to get the job done. I too believe that with all of this hard work, amazing things will happen! At the moment, I just consider myself blessed with a lot of positivity around me.

2) My good friend Shannon, shared this quote when I lost my job in April. This quote instantly stuck with me. I've been looking at my career the wrong way! At one point, I grew impatient and frustrated with being the designer I was, ultimately loosing that spark. This past year, I've found my love for design again and the motivation has been very strong. I'm excited, influenced by others and my passion for design is running wild, filled with creativity!

3) This was actually the title of Atmosphere's fourth studio album. Basically, I see it like this... "Have fun in life... don't overwork yourself." It's as simple as that!

Logo design: P+M Experience

Logo/Letterhead design for Bomb Hip-Hop's P+M: "The Prince and Michael Experience." Fun idea, we took a note from the iconic Public Enemy logo.

The Prince and Michael Experience is meant to celebrate the music of two of the biggest pop cultural icons of our generation. It is done with love and mutual respect for both artists. This dance party event features music from Prince, Michael, The Time, The Jackson 5, Sheila E., Janet Jackson, Vanity 6 and many more. It's been 8 years now and Dave Paul (proprietor of hip-hop label Bomb Records) has hosted, DJ'ed selections of hits, rarities, and remixes from both artists are presented over the course of the evening, audience members square off in funky battle, holding signs bearing the mug of their favored entertainer to judge which one is the true king of pop. For more information peep P+M: The Prince and Michael Experience.

Artist Spotlight: Asher (Seattle, WA)

Artwork by Asher of Graff Roots fame, Custom airbrush and graffiti artists. Seattle, Washington.

During my visit to the Cannery Market in Seattle last month I met a local street artist named Asher with booth set up alongside other local merchants. The first thing that caught my eye was this stencil air brush piece he had drawn out on a skate board. Of course the artwork depicts one of my favorite movies ever: "The Warriors" (1979 film) I just had to have it! After purchasing this one of a kind piece, Asher and I chopped it up a bit sharing each others artistic backgrounds and exchanged contact info. I'm hoping in the near future we can collaborate on a future project, perhaps a shirt design of some sort. It was just great seeing his set up and hip-hop culture illustrated through art. Be sure to check out his site for more samples: www.graffroots.blogspot.com
